Connect Mock to your course system
With LTI 1.3, a teacher adds Mock to a course like any other activity. Students open the exam from the course without a separate login, the exam runs in its own window, and their marks go back to the gradebook when they are final. It works with Moodle, Canvas, Blackboard and D2L Brightspace.
How it fits together
- The School Head adds Mock to the course system once (below) and saves the course system's values on Mock's Integrations page.
- A teacher adds the Mock activity to a course and opens it once. It shows a code.
- The teacher enters the code on the Integrations page and chooses one of their own exams.
- Students open the activity. The exam starts in a new window. When the marks are final they appear in the gradebook.
Mock is for School Heads with an active school plan. A teacher who belongs to the school can connect activities to their own exams. The exam must belong to a class and be active.
Moodle
1. Add Mock as a tool (administrator)
Site administration, then Plugins, Activity modules, External tool, Manage tools, configure a tool manually. Enter:
| Tool name | Mock |
|---|---|
| Tool URL | https://mockassessment.com/lti/launch |
| LTI version | LTI 1.3 |
| Public key type | Keyset URL |
| Public keyset | https://mockassessment.com/lti/jwks |
| Initiate login URL | https://mockassessment.com/lti/login |
| Redirection URI(s) | https://mockassessment.com/lti/launch |
| Default launch container | New window |
| IMS LTI Assignment and Grade Services | Use this service for grade sync and column management |
| Share launcher's name / email with tool | Always |
| Accept grades from the tool | Always |
| Tool configuration usage | Show in activity chooser and as a preconfigured tool |
If names and emails are not shared, students still work: Mock uses their course system id and the name "Student".
2. Tell Mock about Moodle
After saving, open the tool's configuration details in Moodle. Copy these into the Integrations page, Step 2: Platform ID is the issuer, then Client ID, Deployment ID, Public keyset URL, Access token URL and Authentication request URL.
3. Add the activity to a course (teacher)
Add an activity, choose External tool, then Mock. Set the grade type to Point so there is a gradebook column, and the launch container to a new window. Save, open the activity once, and note the code it shows.
Canvas
1. Add Mock as a tool (administrator)
Admin, Developer Keys, + Developer Key, LTI Key. Choose Enter URL and use https://mockassessment.com/lti/config.json. Save and turn the key on. Copy the key's client id (the number under its name). Then in Settings, Apps, View App Configurations, + App, by Client ID, install it. Open the app's settings to find the Deployment Id.
2. Tell Mock about Canvas
On the Integrations page, Step 2, enter the client id, the deployment id and these Canvas addresses (the usual ones for Canvas in the cloud; check them against your Canvas documentation if you host Canvas yourself):
| Issuer | https://canvas.instructure.com |
|---|---|
| Authentication request address | https://sso.canvaslms.com/api/lti/authorize_redirect |
| Access token address | https://sso.canvaslms.com/login/oauth2/token |
| Public keyset address | https://sso.canvaslms.com/api/lti/security/jwks |
3. Add the activity to a course (teacher)
Create an Assignment with points, set the submission type to External Tool, find Mock, and save. Open the assignment once as a teacher and note the code.
Blackboard and D2L Brightspace
Use your system's "register an LTI 1.3 tool" screen with the same five values as above (tool URL, login URL, redirect URI, public keyset URL, and the grade service). Then enter your system's issuer, client id, deployment id and three addresses on the Integrations page.
Connect the activity to an exam
The first time a teacher opens an unconnected activity, Mock shows a 10-character code and a button to open Mock. On the Integrations page, enter the code, choose the exam, and press Connect. From then on:
- a student who opens the activity starts that exam, with the same timer, strikes and marking as a student who typed an exam code;
- a teacher who opens it sees which exam it is connected to;
- when a student's marks are final, the score is sent to the gradebook. If a teacher changes a mark later, the new score is sent again.
If something goes wrong
| "Open this in its own window" | The course page held the activity inside a frame and the browser did not keep the sign-in. Set the launch container to a new window. |
|---|---|
| "Not connected" | The school has not saved this course system on the Integrations page, or the issuer or client id differs from what the course system shows. |
| "This deployment is not registered" | The deployment id on the Integrations page does not match the course system's. |
| No grade in the gradebook | The activity is not set to be graded (Moodle: grade type Point; Canvas: an assignment with points), or the grade service was not enabled for the tool. |
| "The launch has expired" | The activity was opened from an old page. Open it again. |
